Who is an Iowan?

Bachman, Romney
This time around we did not read Patrick Limerick's fine essay, "Will the real Californian please stand up?" as we considered the remaking of American identity and questions about what constitutes authentic American identity.  Nonetheless, I've been thinking about that essay and the question as I read that Michelle Bachman is pressing her identity as a 'strong Iowa woman."  What, I wonder, is the justification for this?

Yes, she was born in Waterloo, in Iowa, but how long did she live there?  Has she ever paid taxes in the state?  Doesn't she currently reside in Minnesota?  Isn't she, in fact, an elected official representing Minnesota in the USA House of Representatives?

If she is still in the race after Tuesday, will she keep presenting herself as an Iowan, or will she recast herself for the national audience and mention that she has long lived in Minnesota.
