 So, is it true that the American dream is of whatever is just over the horizon? There is never end to it? Is this what drives us to keep at it, to hope for a new day, to believe that there will be change?
 If so, maybe we should change our national anthem to "Somewhere over the rainbow."

Perfect freedom

Dillard's graphic image is of the weasel's skeleton with its teeth clamped into the neck of a predatory bird, perhaps an eagle.  But today my image is of a blizzard insisting that we all stay home and thereby bestowing freedom from ACTs, concerts, Christmas shopping, and any number of other competing opportunities and responsibilities.  I know that this is not freedom for some who wanted to do those things or for those who still must be out plowing or selling groceries or otherwise taking care of business.  Even in my house there is work to be done: grading, and bill paying, and making cookies.  But the doing of it, with the horizontal snow blowing outside the window and an occasional bird landing on the feeder, seems more like freedom than captivity today.  And even though I'm still blogging and checking up on other people on Facebook, I realize that this freedom is freedom from distraction as well as from decisions.

spiritualism and final essay assignments

Gosh, in the midst of talking to students about their assignment for the end of the term I realized that we've asked them to do something rather "era appropriate."  (This little phrase picking up on "developmentally appropriate" as when a two year old repeats "no, No, NO, NO," or a teenager seems always a bit unfinished, or a middle-aged professor begins to lose track of her papers.)


The "common place" blog intentionally picked up on the common place book, something Jefferson kept.  Now, we ask you/them to write a letter from 2010 to a person in the 1860s.  This reminds me, in an "era appropriate" way of the craze for spiritualism in the 19th century.  Can you imagine yourself gathered around a table with a medium who promises to be in contact with the "dear departed"?  (And, why does writing about this topic require so many scare quotes?)

More seriously, this assignment and this observation both suggest that a liberal arts education puts lively young students in conversation with dead people in the hope that the world in the future will be a place worth living in.  For Christians this notion that community extends across time, both into the past and into the life beyond, is common; but, for Americans it might be a bit of a stretch to consider how both the now dead and those not yet born are part of the conversation.  A stretch, but a valuable effort.

dreams and desire

Is it the case that the American Dream depends upon unfilled desire rather than upon satisfaction or contentment?  Is it the case that in this dream no one will ever have enough of whatever it is that they long for?  Is that good for the pursuit of justice but bad for the pursuit of happiness?

I'm reminded of the cat who could count to more.

Franklin, Douglass, Obama

Yesterday we talked about Frederick Douglass in conversation with Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography and (then) Senator Obama's 2008 speech on race in America.  While the differences in their circumstances are obvious, there are also some telling similarities in their commitment to education, or at least the value of learning.  What stood out for me is their common optimism that individuals and the nation can improve. Once again this seems to support the very elastic notion that the American Dream is "of a better, richer, and happier life" (Adams quoted by Cullen) and the expectation that the dream can be realized. 

I also notice that Franklin tells his story in a way that highlights the individual.  Douglass does the same but with the agenda of expanding opportunity for many through the abolition of slavery.  Obama gives individual examples, including his own life, but links the well-being of each to the well-being of others.  The trajectory here is to enlarge the scope of who is "eligible" for the dream and then to recognize inter-dependence as foundational to achieving the dream.  This is a fine starting place for 102 and our investigation of "Democratic Vistas" in the 19th and early 20th century.

free designs

DESIGNING MINDS  This provocative post by my friend and colleague Jim Farrell extends our discussion of place and houses to more sorts of stuff (e.g. chairs) and lives.  Reading it as I have been reading Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs, I also notice other connotations of the verb, "to design."

  • Dr. Flint has designs on Linda.
  • Aunt Martha (Grandmother)'s house is designed in such as way as to provide a hiding place for Linda.
  • The whole system of slavery draws everyone near it into its design.
You get the picture.  We might also say that the book itself is designed to reveal a design that makes persons into property.  The two primary meanings seem to point in different directions.  The one suggests the designer's intentionality, vile and virtuous; the other allows that the design itself, intentional or not, has power to subordinate its elements.  And yet, the book does show us examples of persons who resist the design of slavery in small and large ways.

I doubt that we humans can live in total free-form design (i.e. chaos or constant improvisation), but Jacob's book, read in 2010 can serve as a reminder that slavery is not the only design that can diminish human life and steal freedom as well as stimulate readers to consider how to better design their lives for freedom: their own and that of others around them.

slave to fashion?

In the month of November I made a moderate effort to go on a "clothing diet."  (What is this? And if you google "clothing diet" you will fine much more.)  Try as I might, I only got down to seven pieces of clothing for public wearing (e.g. school, church, and other places where I think I need to dress like a grown-up) and while I made an effort to contain what I wore "off hours," I did not count those items.  I did not count shoes or boots, stockings, long underwear, ordinary underwear, nightgown, jewelry, outer wear (i.e. warm coats, hats, gloves), or scarves.  (NB: the scarf category in my wardrobe is very full.)

The outcome: it was not difficult.  I was not bored with my attire. I was reminded of traveling with a single suitcase and the freedom that comes from having only a few choices to make.  No one commented on the lack of variation in my clothing so I don't know if anyone noticed.  The discipline did help me decide not to buy some new things, but in the final week I could not resist an on-sale jacket, a classic design in my colors, that could be the eighth piece or might replace one of the original seven.  The principle challenge was being warm enough as the season changed from a warm fall to the cold of winter.  In the summer, six pieces is simple; in the winter, it requires careful selection.

Just as my experiment is more-or-less coming to an end this sobering passage in Frederick Douglass' Narrative rather put my game into historical and moral perspective.  "Their [the slaves] yearly clothing consisted of two coarse linen shirts, one jacket, one pair of trousers for winter, made of coarse negro cloth, one pair of stockings, and one pair of shoes; the whole of which could not have cost more than seven dollars."  The passages continues to describe what was given to children and notes "When these failed them, they went naked until the next allowance day."  (Dover edition, p .6)

Real grassroots?

Lots of student editorials (well several) argued that the Tea Party movement is 1) not very well organized and 2) not really a grassroots movement.  So, of course this book by Jeffery Stout catches my attention.  The publisher's description promises stories of "ordinary" citizens working together in ways that preserve democracy and make America a better place.

deTocqueville, Advertising, Norwegian Sweaters, and Thanksgiving

That is a mouthful.

The connection comes from Mary C Water's book, Ethnic Options: Choosing Identities in America.  In her discussion of "symbolic" ethnicity she draws upon both deTocqueville (anticipating 102!) and William O. Beeman's analysis of advertising. 

About deTocqueville she writes: "Tocqueville noticed that while individualism led people to find their own beliefs within themselves, this isolation was at the same time compatible with conformity, because people are constantly looking for affirmation of those beliefs in the people around them."  (p. 148)

She quotes Beeman: "In the United States, through exercise of individual choice, people not only demonstrate their uniqueness, they also recognize and actualize their integration with others.  They do this by making, acknowledging, and perpetuating ties based solely on the affinity that arises through making the same choices."  (Waters, p. 150).  Advertisers depend upon this combination of individualism and conformity when they offer us such things as blue jeans as a mode of self-expression and as a vehicle for demonstrating our membership in the group of people who wear that brand and style of jeans.

Thus, Waters argues that in the third and four generation after immigration, Americans select their ethnic identification in ways similar to selecting their cola preference: Pepsi, Coke, Royal Crown, etc.  This sort of symbolic ethnicity does not require, or grow from, membership in an ethnic association or speaking the language or living in an enclave.  It is as easy as wearing a Norwegian sweater to Christmas Festival at St. Olaf.

Another scheme for thinking about this comes from Willard B. Moore in the catalog for Circles of Tradition, an exhibit of folk art in Minnesota.  He identifies three circles of tradition: integrated, perceived, and celebrated.  In the first "forms, techniques, materials and symbolic meanings" are tightly integrated with community life. In the second, function either practical or symbolic, is primary.  In the last, form is most important.

What struck me as I read Waters' conclusions was how closely they coincided with my recent post "Thanksgiving Jazz."  She helped me to see that my observations about Thanksgiving might well be described with reference to this negotiation of individuality and conformity, this affinity based upon making the same choices.

In class learning

Enich's Amcon Thoughts: Slave Justification:

I'm sure that every now and then students do learn something in the midst of class.  In fact I have treasured memories of times I've watched the proverbial light-bulb click on as I have watched.  It is an awesome sight.  (I use the term in its original sense: that is, inspiring awe.)   Moreover, this is a joy rare enough that I'm always grateful for it.  So too, I'm grateful to Enich for this post to his blog which includes the news that he made a discovery in class.  Thank you, Enich.

I'm also gratified that our efforts to think about slavery produced this specific learning: that American slavery did not appear full blown one afternoon in 1619 or even in the mid-1700s or the early 1800s.  My hunch is that most Americans, regardless of our personal biological relationships to either slaves or slave owners, find our national history of slavery and its continued aftermath shameful, painful, and frightening enough that merely acknowledging the existence of slavery in "the land of the free" is hard enough.  The topic sets us quivering with emotion and politics. To also take a careful, honest look at the large decisions and small compromises made by individuals, legislators, and institutions along the way to racialized, hereditary, life-time slavery is harder still.

Nonetheless, doing so is important not only for what we learn about the past, but also for what we learn about ourselves and our own potential for dramatic and banal evil.  We need to be reminded of our ""perilous liberty."  That is, our liberty is both"full of danger" and "exposed to imminent risk of disaster."  The term is Jefferson's.  Who better to serve as a warning to us about dangers of not paying attention to our scruples and about the importance of giving freedom a firm foundation in equality and justice.

BBC: "dense" objects

The British Museum and the BBC team up to tell the history of the world through a relatively few objects. (To be precise, through 100 objects at the start.  Individuals have added more.) Their site says nothing about dense facts, but their approach will be familiar to students of American studies.  Read an object, perhaps an ordinary one or perhaps a rare one; follow the story it unfolds to see what can be learned about the world it was a part of.

Unlike the probate lists we consulted in class or the dorm room inventories students prepared, these objects are selected rather than being everything one person or household or empire possessed  The objects are selected from the museum's collection which suggests that a museum is, intentionally or not, a sort of time-capsule.  The difference is that the makers and users of the objects did not set them aside for this purpose as we might when determining which things to put in a time capsule for 2010.  (The Doc Marten's are an individual contribution, so intentional for a recent decade.)

BBC has broadcast all 100 episodes.  (Among the more recent objects: a plastic credit-card. This would inevitably lead us to "The Graduate," to department stores, to identity theft, to bottled water, to recycling, and more.)  The pod-casts are available along with photos of objects, a time-line, and other interesting stuff.

Thanksgiving jazz

This year we did not have our customary AmCon 101, day-before-break, discussion of Thanksgiving.    That topic allows us to tie together lots of themes from the semester: reading images such as paintings and cartoons of the "First Thanksgiving," the role of mythos and history in national identity, the importance of social location in memory, etc.   We read about Plymouth Plantation and mid-20th century Native American protests.  We talk about presidental declarations and the development of food practices.  I missed the conversation.  Last Sunday's Mpls StarTrib ran a feature about Thanksgiving illustrated by Rockwell's poster, "Freedom From Want."  We could have talked about that as well.

then there is the day after
As I've been planning for the dinner at our house tomorrow, I've also been thinking about how another American cultural practice might be a fine metaphor for the meal: jazz.  There are certain usual, not quite mandatory, elements to this meal that function almost like the chord chart.  Knowing that there will be turkey, stuffing/dressing, potatoes, bread, pie, etc. the cook's culinary imagination is set free to consider how to perform the meal this year.  The turkey could be brined in green tea, or deep fat fried, or stuffed with something Italian, or coated in mayonnaise (I kid you not). What variations of cranberry sauce is always a compelling opportunity for me.  This year there are three sorts: a pesto with lots of garlic, chutney with both fresh and dried pears (the later serendipitously supplied by guests last evening), and a sweeter one with red wine and spices!  To shift the metaphor a bit, at least at our house, there are also old standards that won't be riffed upon: the bread dressing my husband's family loves and quarts of gravy for mashed potatoes.
  
Perhaps the brilliance and delight of Thanksgiving is not only that it gives us a channel to express gratitude, or that it is is vaguely religious in a capacious rather than sectarian way, or that it has not been moved to Monday, but that it affords Americans a salutary, creative opportunity to take comfort in the familiar and shared while also engaging in individual innovation.

The poem itself is lovely and bittersweet as the contrasting smells of fresh paint and stale bread suggest.  With an immigration visa in her pocket, the speaker is painting a room in preparation to leave.  Gently the poem evokes the cost of freedom that is won by leaving behind or giving up.

Reading Buildings and other things

Katie kept thinking about Tostrud/Skogland after class and noted that mind, body, and spirit are all cultivated there, but added: "I think that these may have come together for function not as a result of major planning. It is nice and convenient I think and it does make a unique dynamic to the location but I feel like it may not have had a lot of intention."  

She puts her finger on a larger interpretive issue that has come up in class more than once.  Remember those Pocahontas paintings and our questions about what the artists intended for us to receive from their work?  Volumes and volumes have been written on this topic; I won't solve it here.  I do, however, want to make a small suggestion: the more angles of vision we can bring to bear, the richer and perhaps even more accurate will be our reading of a building, a painting, a poem, a political movement. 

Are the multiple-uses of Skogland/Tostrud that address spirit and mind as well as body in an athletic facility MERELY a matter of convenience and function?  How would we know?  What are the limits of our interpretation?
  1. Such an intention would be consistent with the college's official statements of its mission, so we can allow the possibility that this was a principled decision.
  2. The practice, i.e. multiple use buildings that serve spirit, mind, and body or some combination of at least two, is common at St. Olaf, so this might indeed be an institutional habit based in an expressed ideal.  Indeed, we know that the previous gym (now the theater building) was also used for worship over several decades and that the current chapel building includes classrooms.
  3. Next, we should set off to the archives to look for documentary evidence.  Did the planners of the buildings make any statements about their intentions?  What was said at the ground breaking and dedication ceremonies?  Of course, even if we don't find any explicit statements to the positive, unless we find statements in the negative, the possibility of a principled decision remains.
  4. Imagine the alternatives.  If we had the opportunity to hold all classes somewhere other than in Skogland, would we?  If we had the opportunity to hold large events such as Christmas festival somewhere else, would we?  Are these temporary arrangements, consistent with official statements of mission, but not determined by mission?  
  5. Do we need to divide the question a bit?  Surely the classrooms are there "on purpose" even if use of the gym for ceremonial events is in part due to lack of an alternative.  Does this lead us to modify the interpretation so that the intentions of the builders is less central and defensible interpretation by the users is the primary concern?

Buying Identity

No, that is not me, but . . .maybe if  . .
This is the best definition of consumption, or consumerism, that I have read.  Upton makes visible the illusive desire that drives us when we buy stuff, but are really searching for what stuff can not provide.  By doing this Upton also allows the reality that we do need, or at least make use of, some of that stuff for practical purposes.  I need a coat to keep me warm and footwear to keep my feet dry.  The utility of those items is one crucial aspect of why I select this coat, not that one; these boots, not those boots.  Like a building, both coat and boots also have "firmness" that makes them suitable to this climate and durable through the whole winter season, even into the next and the ones after.  Third, winter gear might also have "beauty."  But here is where we get out on thin ice.  If I prefer a red coat and leather boots, if the lines of this coat flatter me and those boots suggest my Scandinavian heritage, have I moved beyond the pleasure of beautiful, useful clothing into consumption?  Have my red coat and leather boots become part of my "quest for identity through sensual means" even if they continue to fulfill their tangible, physical task?

Habits of famous people

In his pockets, Jefferson carried such a variety of portable instruments for making observations and measurements that he's been dubbed a "traveling calculator." Among his collection of pocket-sized devices were scales, drawing instruments, a thermometer, a surveying compass, a level, and even a globe. To record all these measurements, Jefferson carried a small ivory notebook (pictured) on which he could write in pencil. Back in his Cabinet, or office, he later copied the information into any of seven books in which he kept records about his garden, farms, finances, and other concerns; he then erased the writing in the ivory notebook. Even as Franklin's system of self-examination and cultivation of virtues reminds one of the the flurry of i-phone apps for self-improvement, Jefferson's habit of recording all sorts of information seems familiar.  In his pocket he carried a small note-book for temporary jotting.  Later in the day he transferred information to his commonplace books.  This may have been analogous to tweeting to himself.  Perhaps the point is less the specific system and more the habits of noticing and reflecting that these men's peculiar systems support.  Keeping a journal, as many Protestants did to record their spiritual state, or even being forced by one's teachers to write a blog about a class are similar systems also intended to develop and support habits of noticing and reflection upon the world and our place in it.

 Thanks Megan for this response to last weekend's incident.  (Also for the fabulous Play Mobile image!) What a story this is!  This man's refusal of a full-body scan is a fine illustration of the relative value given to security (freedom from fear) and other sorts of freedom.

Every time I stand in that long line, shoes off, 3-1-1 bag in hand, i.d. clenched in my teeth, I think, "For centuries human beings dreamed that being able to fly would make them free."  Not.

Freedom to read

Not only freedom of the press to print, but also our freedom (responsibility) to read are necessary for our informed participation as citizens.

The New Beauty: Sustainability

The New Beauty: Sustainability: "'The default setting of our civilization needs to be reset to ensure that we build a sustainable world that is also spiritually sustaining. ..." 

Commenting on David Orr, Marissa wrote: "I have never thought about sustainability this way: ensuring beauty for the future. Brilliant!"

Thanks Marissa.  Now I need to scroll down to find the post I wrote about Terry Tempest Williams and her assertion that beauty is not optional.  This seems especially significant in view of those three approaches to reading buildings, the third of which asks about its beauty.

Let's keep noticing the attention and value authors and activists give to beauty.  Jonathan Edwards cared for it, but I wonder how often American Christians of various sorts have given any sustained, thoughtful consideration to beauty.  And what about politicians: are they willing to fund projects that include a line-item for beauty?  Yes, there are some provisions for "public art."  Nonetheless, I suspect that beauty is often relegated to the category of values that are expendable.  We Americans most often value function over form.

Is anyone willing to assert freedom from ugliness as important for the common good? Was something like that behind Jefferson's careful design for UVA?

"It's not a revolution if . . . ."

One of those NPR moments: driving home from school this afternoon I heard part of a story about changes in technology.  Of course I didn't catch the name of the author being interviewed.  Nonetheless, this statement doesn't need either the author's name or the precise context to be thought provoking.

"It is not a revolution if there aren't any losers."  Is this true?  Are there always losers in a revolution?  Not much reflection was needed for me to begin to think that this probably is true and to be rather taken aback that I so seldom think about this reality.  Perhaps the aura of triumph and patriotic pride that surrounds our American Revolution leads us--me--to focus upon the happy outcome that our nation came into being, the first nation founded on a good idea.

Certainly the British lost the war, but I wonder how much they cared.  That is a question someone must have written about.  In these last few days we have been reading some authors who pointed out that the Revolutionary promise of freedom was a long time in fulfillment for many types of Americans; those Americans might be construed as losers in some sense.

If the tea party movement is pushing us toward some sort of revolution in governance, we'd do well to consider who will lose in the changes.

pop culture and the declaration

Cullen says that the Revolution is not of immediate interest to many Americans.  This disinterest is in contrast to our irritated interest in the Puritans and uncomfortable awareness that the issues of the Civil War are not settled.  Cullen suggests that contemporary Americans are still interested in the Declaration of Independence.  I'm sure he is pointing to its ideals more than to the document itself as an artifact.  And yet there is the movie, "American Treasure."  It is fun and fast paced and plunges viewers into arcane details of the Revolutionary era.  It makes me laugh out loud.  It almost convinces me to like Nicholas Cage.  Of all the bits and pieces in the movie, I like Ben Franklin's glasses the best.  Sure, this is partially because I have bifocals, but it is also because the notion that Franklin manipulates how we see so many decades after his death seems in character.  I think he would have been pleased as well as amused.

books

What is the difference between Thomas Jefferson's love of books and contemporary infatuation with digital connectivity?  At least one significance difference that matters a great deal in my experience is this: each book I hold in my  hand is a distinct encounter with the material world.  I have a sensory experience of the book that includes how it appears to my eyes (color, size, shape, design and more), how it feels in my hands (size, weight, texture, etc.) , its aroma.  Even it the author is not in the room with me, the book imposes the reality that its author is a person and its ideas are embodied.
When I provide access to readings via a PDF, I mourn the opportunity to hold the book or journal in one's hands and the possibility that touching the paper will be a channel of interaction with the author as well as a transfer of information.  While I don't want to minimize the power of imagination which can transport one from 21st century Minnesota to 1st century Greece or 19th century India via a book or a on-line text, I also know that being in 21st century Greece with one's foot on the old Roman Road or in 21st century India surrounded by the aroma of jasmine stimulates the imagination and facilitates time travel.

buildings: reading, writing, interpreting

Vitruvius, via Barnet, urges us to consider three aspects of buildings:
  1. function or utility
  2. firmness or structural soundness
  3. beauty or design
So far, so good.  Barnet also offers suggestions about how an essay about a building might be organized and the sorts of topics (e.g. color, light, materials, etc.) that might be discussed.  I'm all in favor of good writing and I'm convinced that Barnet's advise about how to "read" a building is likely to help us do this well.  Nonetheless, there are two other aspects of a building that I'm interested in, but which are not central to this chapter: symbolic meaning and community.

In his discussion, he offers examples that point to the symbolic function of buildings, or to their meaning, which is related to but not quite the same thing as their function.  Of course some buildings are intended to make a statement, while others just do so because human beings are seekers of meaning and we will make meaning out of whatever materials are available.

While these three factors all assume human action in design, construction, and use, the people who use the building are not Barnet's primary concern.  Some buildings are no longer in ordinary use, but most buildings were constructed with the expectation that they would be used.  I"m curious about how our reading of a building might also contribute to our understanding of the communities that use them.  More specifically, could we use the same three foci to consider a community?
  1.  What is the community's reason for being?  What is its purpose?
  2. How sound is its structure, organization, and institutions?
  3. What beauty or delight does the community generate?  What good does it offer?

All of this calls to mind the work of St. Olaf faculty member Mary Griep.  In her current body of work,
ANASTYLOSIS PROJECT, she re-presents 12th century sacred buildings from around the world.  Rather than writing about them, she constructs scale drawings that also incorporate techniques such as collage.   Of course she can not include an American building in this project, nonetheless, her work provides an inspiring example of paying close attention to the details as well as to the whole.  Each drawing highlights the beauty of the building and suggests its meaning.

Sara Miles (not Benjamin Franklin): freedom from want

This evening Sara Miles read from her books Take This Bread and Jesus Freak in St Olaf's Viking Theater.  She told the story of her "coming late to Christianity" by means of being fed at St. Gregory of Nyssa church in San Francisco and of her continuing conversion while founding and overseeing a food pantry (video) where 600 families are given groceries every week.  She convinced the leaders of the parish to try the project by quoting the passage from Luke inscribed on their altar: He ate with sinners.  She tells this as a story about Christianity and the church.  Certainly it is that.  Surely there is much to learn from her assertion that a spiritual life is also a physical life.

I'm intrigued by what she says about church, but I also listened with AmCon ears and was struck by the degree to which her story is the opposite of Franklin's story.  Rather than offering sage little proverbs about how to get ahead and recounting contributions to the common good as Franklin did, Miles simply described her experience of receiving abundant grace in a piece of bread and being compelled to give away food. Can this be an American story?  Could we recognize our abundance as a charter for generosity? Could the dream be for a "better, richer life" for everyone, not just for anyone who wants it badly enough, and works hard enough, or is lucky enough?

Perhaps the way to insure freedom from want is to share.

  1. We have long associated the first with the second.  
  2. Having a car is a symbol of and a tool for freedom that far exceeds mere transportation or mobility.  
  3. The Eisenhower interstate highway system was built to insure national security, but ends up being used for cars that allow us to go on vacation and to have houses a long way from our employment.  
  4. But, that also limits the time we spend at home and forces us to spend time in traffic, if we have cars and jobs and houses in the suburbs.  
  5. Not to mention our "enslavement" to those who have the oil needed to fuel the cars.

I picked this one because it shows us that someone thought that a picture of a Puritan in a big hat would help sell something.  What?  We've read R. Greene on use of images of  Indian women to sell tobacco and other products.  That makes sense.  Indians were associated with tobacco.  Images of  indian women had both positive and negative symbolic power.  What, I wonder, is the symbolic power of this Puritan?

Freedom had or longed for

The most striking point J. Cullen makes in his chapter on the Declaration of Independence is his assertion that before the Declaration and the Revolution, freedom was something free, Englishmen in the colonies had and after that freedom became something they and others dreamed of having.  Before, it was something to be preserved; after, it was something longed for, even fought for. 

This suggests that American freedom is a bit like faith as presented in the epistle to the Hebrews: the assurance of things unseen.  Indeed, the distance between American ideals and American reality is the space in which the dream exists, but only if there is an expectation that the gap can be closed.  If America is predicated on a dream, or on having a dream, the eschatology is always marked by longing rather than fulfillment

process: strategic planning and revolution

Friday evening and most of Saturday I spent at my congregation engaged in strategic planning.  Anyone who has been involved in such an exercise in the past years would recognize the steps, the jargon, the big-paper-on-the wall, post-its, markers, and colored dots for "voting."   All of this is intended as a method to direct lots of people's energy and ideas toward some larger purpose while generating their "buy in."  I've done it before; I've even been the one asking folks to do it.

But this time I was doing it while also thinking about the American Revolution and that led me to think some new things:

  1. There is an implicit theory of revelation at work.  At least in a church setting, the unstated assumption is that by following this process a group of 50 people (in our case) will happen upon a true understanding of God's intentions for them and their congregation.  We prayed a little.  We did not read the Bible.  We trusted that the Spirit would speak through us and our process.  Could be, but it is a novel sort of discernment process.
  2. My hunch is that this is more a democratic expectation than a Christian one.   That is to say, the process was not developed as a spiritual practice, but out of a democratic view of of governance and planning that expects that a bunch of people conferring together will arrive at wise decisions about what is good for them and others.
  3. I wondered if I could write a satirical  sketch about the Committee of Five and the Continental Congress as they worked their way through SWOT analysis, drafting a mission statement, waiting for the Pennsylvania delegation to get approval from home of that draft, moving on to vision statements, and then proposing action steps.  Imagine the excitement if we could find some post-it-notes written by Samuel Adams!

Tea party -- then and now

Thanks to Dan for pointing out this NPR story that takes up the symbolic and historical connections between the contemporary tea party movement and the pre-Revolutionary destruction of tea by an unruly group of Bostonians mildly disguised as Mohawks.   While this is hardly a new insight, I'm reminding while reading that history often is transformed into mythos.   When it is, the power of the story is less in the accuracy of the details than in the way it inspires imagination and action.

When I used the idiom, "feet of clay," in class yesterday I got back looks of incomprehension.  I could easily say that the idiom indicates that a person is not as good as one might have thought, but I did not know the origin of the phrase.  Here it is: Daniel 2: 34.  The reference is to a statue made of metals, but whose feet are clay and easily broken.  So, the phrase indicates a hidden flaw that weakens the figure.

Were the elite of the founding generation whiners?  Did they provoke a revolution in order to win for themselves freedoms they desired when they already had lots of forks and their contemporaries lacked both forks and other necessities?  Did they not care about those who were less free, indentured, or enslaved?  Did they know better and compromise on their ideals? If so, does that make them hypocrites?   And if they were, are we any different or better?  

Great questions from today's discussion in section A where we considered the revolution from the perspective of people who owned few if any forks or who were required to polish other people's forks and may have longed for something to eat, with or without forks.

Next week we'll turn to the Declaration of Independence.  I'm looking forward to reading it with these questions in mind.  These are not precisely the questions Jefferson, Franklin, and Adams were addressing, but neither are these questions irrelevant to what they wrote.

getting a life

Yet one more that connects with Franklin, but not only to him.  We put Franklin in a section titled "The Good Life in America" that is our run up to the Declaration of Independence and all of this is part of our larger, semester long attention to freedom.  So, we could say that the whole term is about "getting a life."  But, the question, always remains, which one is the life one wants to get?  [Here I should go find a Billy Collins poem.  When I get it, I'll link it.]  What is that dream that America offers and Americans long for?

At. St. Olaf we've come to talk about this a lot in terms of vocation.  Why?  Well, you can point to the money the Lilly Endowment gave out to a bunch of schools for "theological reflection on vocation."  We got some of that, so we were obligated to think about vocation.  But, before there was money in it, and after the money is gone, we also have the treasure of Lutheran teaching on the topic of vocation.  This is not what Paul Dovre has called vocation-lite.  Rather this is vocation that comes from outside the hearer; a calling that calls one out of the easy places to significant, response-ability, consist with God's gracious intentions for the world: justice, mercy, abundant life for all.  Perhaps the voice will be directly God's, but it may as often be the voice of the neighbor that calls.  This is a calling that anticipates response, even obedience.

Here David Brooks, a political observer, gives us another take on such a life,using different vocabulary: the summoned self.  Link  I'm reminded of Annie Dillard's essay, Living Like a Weasel, in which she write about the "perfect freedom of a single necessity."  Perhaps this a more generalized expression of what the Puritans and Anne Hutchinson were looking for.  They anticipated the "perfect freedom" of obedience to God.  This is a sort of autonomy, unconstrained moral freedom, even when the barriers are many and strong.

At St. Olaf we think of Jim Farrell  (see his new book: The Nature of College) as the king of the dense fact, perhaps even as the originator of this approach.  In fact, it is an American Studies approach which appears to have been suggested by Gene Wise in 1979.  Recently I gained some new perspective on the dense fact approach and disciplinary study when I heard from two remarkable scholars at the 2010 American Academy of Religion meetings in Atlanta.

First: Richard Carp spoke to a workshop on interdisciplinarity.  As I've come to expect from him, he brought clarity to the complex matter without over simplification.

Terminology: mutlidisciplinary is like parallel play.  Two or more disciplines are in play, but not with each other.  I (DeAne) think of this a bit like a meal served in courses.  Interdisciplinary requires that two or more disciplines are working together.  I suppose this might be like using two chop-sticks rather than a spoon which is set down and then a fork.  Transdisciplinary, is applied to a topic or subject of study that requires more than one discipline to consider.  Food, in my view, is a fine example of such a topic.  A dense fact needs to be such a topic.

Richard also spoke of these matters by analogy to sight, more specifically to the difference between the way lizards see and the way human do.  Both have two eyes, but the lizard's eyes are on the side of its head and separated by a snout.  This arrangement prevents depth perception.  In contrast, human eyes are closer together and allow for depth perception.  Interdisciplinary approaches allow for, long for, new dimensions of depth and insight.  Applied to a dense fact, interdisciplinary approaches "reveal deeper meanings inside themselves, and point outward to other facts, other ideas, other meanings."

Second, Jonathan Z. Smith, in a plenary session recalled his proposal for a University of California curriculum (in the mid 1960s) that would require each student to spend a semester, or maybe a year, pursuing all that could be learned starting from a single sentence.  He did not speak of dense facts, but the example he gave from a military report and that he explored surely was like what we intend.  And it demonstrated the sort of anti-disciplinary position that Carp took at the end of our day.  Smith clearly cared more about learning and knowledge than about sharpening the tools of the discipline as ends in themselves.

moral perfection app?

One more on Franklin.  While some students found his daily scheme for cultivating virtue "over the top," I can not help but wonder what sort of I-phone aps he might devise if he lived today.  Here are ten to help one lose weight: LINK  Wouldn't the scientist and inventor want to put this technology to work towards solving an elevated dilemma, such as how to achieve moral perfection?

"One of the delights of studying American history in the 18th century is that this remarkable polymath, visionary, down-to-earth jack-of-all-trades pops up everywhere.  There were few contemporary pies into which he did not insert a self-seeking finger.  We know a lot about him because he wrote on the best of all autobiographies."  p. 134  Paul Johnson, A History of the American People

Now we have the opposite problem to the one that face us relative to Pocahontas.  Instead of knowing little about her, we know lots about him and his views of himself.  Nonetheless, we don't know everything.  His autobiography, like all examples of the genre, is crafted (perhaps composed as a page of type) to reveal his life as he wants to to be understood.  If it  is also a sort of self-help book, advise for the young American, the book and its author suggest that self-interest and public good can be coordinate goals.  However, he also models a life that is segmented: first the period of direct involvement in his business, then the period of public service. This echoed in my car as I listened to an interview with businesswoman Meg Whitman, a candidate for governor of California.  She has been CEO of e-bay but not politically active.  What, I wondered, would Franklin say about this preparation for government leadership?

errata in a book of a life


The book is the metaphor Benjamin Franklin uses most often to consider his life.  Even as he writes his autobiography and describes his work as a printer who composes the page of type, he is also suggesting that his life can be corrected as the composer can remove the wrong letter and replace it in the tray with the correct letter.

I'm reminded of Elsa, a woman who worked in the office where I had my first post-college job.  This was in the early days of photocopying (1976-7) so we did not have a photocopy machine in our office.  Instead we had a mimeograph machine that required us to "cut" a stencil on the typewriter, attach it to the drum, and then run-off the copies by turning the drum so that ink was pressed through the stencil on to the paper.  Elsa was a master of every step in the process including correction of errors.  Usually an error in typing/cutting the stencil was corrected by first painting over the error with correction fluid that filled in the wrong holes and then recutting through the patch.  However, once we forgot the second step and ran hundreds of copies of the song sheet for a pastors' retreat with a syllable missing from one of the songs.  Elsa to the rescue!  I watched in admiration as she cut a new stencil that consisted solely of the single missing syllable and then reran the whole stack of song sheets.  When she was done, no one could have seen the repair.

Are repairs in one's life made so neatly?  When Franklin entered into a common-law marriage with Deborah Reed, did he undo the errata of having neglected their engagement?  Surely he did not erase the consequences of events and actions.  Perhaps the metaphor works better for his financial debts.

breaking archeological news

Thanks to Liza for this LINK to a Wall Street Journal notice of new finds in historic Jamestown.  Archeologists have uncovered the location of a church, perhaps the location of Pocahontas' marriage to Rolfe.  That is what catches the popular imagination.  The building is also of interest for its suggestion that the Jamestown English might have been a bit more pious than they have been given credit for.

Marilyn Monroe and the Teaparty

Petra gives us the link to this editorial "Making Ignorance Chic" by Maureen Dowd in which she works her way from recent interest in MM to Sarah Palin by way of comments on the bifurcation of beauty and intelligence. (The StarTrib published this with a lovely photo of Monroe wearing glasses, a sure marker of female intelligence.)  I know this seems improbable.  Nonetheless, I think Dowd is on to something important about the character of contemporary political life.  She notes the Monroe made efforts to associate with intellectuals and to participate in their circles.  In contrast, she observes that Palin seems to disdain even the appearance of knowledge and clear thought. Glamour, a sort of magic spell, replaces ability.

:...the Dumb Blonde of '50s cinema had a firm grasp of on one thing: It was cool to be smart. . . . But now another famous beauty with glowing skin and a powerful current, Sarah Palin, has made ignorance fashionable."
You may not be convinced, but the editorial is worth reading and pondering.

Material World

PBS presents some of Peter Menzel's photos from the 1990s.  He set out to document the possessions of "average" families from around the world.  Opal reminded me of this project and it seems relevant also to the reading from Jonathan Butler.

Butler describes the results of a late 17th century consumer revolution in the North American colonies.  Of course the change involved how much people had and how they got those things; it also involved which things they wanted.  The symbolic function of material possessions (including food, clothing, shelter, and other movable goods) becomes more evident when we consider desire for one item rather than another that fills the same practical function.

If colonial North Americans were negotiating their identity as Europeans who did not live in Europe by means of the stuff they wanted and perhaps had, many people today are doing something similar relative American stuff and its symbolic value. Which is not to say that Americans have ceased doing so.  Surely paying attention to the origin of the items on our room inventories would lead us to ask more questions about economic networks, about advertising, about markers of status, about the source of our desires, about the notion that St. Olaf students are preparing to be citizens of the world.

school lists, education, and values

In the last couple of weeks, alongside classes, I have been writing a piece about educational opportunities for Norwegian-American women. To do so I read about several schools, including some that no longer exist. And I returned to some of my older work. In an article published by Norwegian-American Historical Association I found my comment on some of the items a student would have brought with her to the Lutheran Ladies' Seminary in Red Wing, Minnesota. (The school closed in 1920 following a fire.)
  • a dictionary
  • a Bible
  • "a suit for drills in physical culture"
  • "a large apron to protect her cotton dresses during domestic science labs"
  • napkins and a napkin ring
The equipment is indicative of the sort of education this student would receive.

In addition to suggesting something about what one does, one's processions convey something about one's values.  Many AmCon students are surprised by how much they have in their rooms and begin to ask themselves, Why do I think I need this?  Or, what do I want this for? As Erik noticed, not everything in his room was necessary for survival, but much of it has a purpose.

Traveling offers us opportunities to reconsider what is needed both along the way and at home.  Here is challenge to pare down even at home: Six Items or Less  I'm certain that making do with six items of clothing for a week or a month would be an education.  Certainly one would learn something about a kind of freedom that comes from having enough, but not too much.

Perseverance, a necessary virtue

If the Hacker ethic essentializes freedom, what is that notion of freedom?  Is it merely freedom from constraint?  Is it the positive freedom to act, to find the hole, to exploit?  Does it have any limits?  Any responsibilities?  Is it mitigated or moderated by willingness to persist at a difficult task?

That persistence, or perseverance, is a virtue I have been meditating upon.  This is contrary to an American inclination to "get out of Dodge."  Heading west into the open future is one way to pursue an American dream of a better life.  (Yes, that is deliberately vague.)  But . . . that perpetual motion misses the transformation of space into place; it misses the slow growth of communities that share memories as well as the present.  This is not easy.

After the talk on hacker ethics, alum Sam Graber remarked: sounds a bit like the Paracollege.  He was right about the commitment to knowledge, the cultivation of learning as playful, willingness to push the system in pursuit of these ends.

And, its memorial, "Para-pillars," invites the viewer to enter into the piece by planting one's feet on the plinth, to become a pillar, to do so looking out from the hill toward the town.  So, to be in a place, but not to be captive to it or limited by it.

edges and ties

One of the speakers at the conference I discussed in my previous post suggested that a Facebook newsfeed tells us something important about personal identity today.  I've continued to ponder this suggestion.  Certainly it is true that very person's "home" page looks different and reflects that individual's unique collection of "friends."  This reality mimics the reality that no one is precisely the same as any other person, a reality sometimes contrasted with a romantic notion of traditional societies in which knowing one fact about a person was likely to reveal many, many more. 

One perspective on this new reality is to lament a sort of identity politics in which finally no one can communicate with or understand anyone else because no one is precisely like me: edges.  This point of despair or mere irritation is reached when we hear ourselves say, "Well, everyone has her own view of what freedom is." At the moment we appear to be giving in to the premise that there is no possibility of making contact across the difference or even much point in trying. 

Another perspective is illuminated by the analogy to the Facebook page.  It highlights the connections and the ways in which each person has the potential to be a bridge between other people or communities: ties.  Rather than each identity factor contributing to increased isolation, each factor provides more points of interconnection. 

This is one way that Bonhoeffer wrote about Christ who is the mediator, not only between the believer and God, but also between the believer and other people.

Perhaps these edges and ties are similar to the dynamics Robert Putnam considers under the terms bonding and bridging in his discussion of social capital.  AmConers: let's remember to take this up next semester!

Face to Face in Time and Place

That is the theme of the conference I attended over the weekend at Valparaiso University.  (SPEAKER BIOS) So much of the conversation was relevant to AmCon in general and to our recent discussions of space, place, and campus in particular.

The first speaker (Gretchen Buggeln) presented a history of campus design from the colonial days to the present and illustrated with images much that we have considered.  Although she did not show slides of St. Olaf campus, I could easily make the connections with familiar observations: the preference for rural or small town-settings in the 19th century, early buildings that combined all the college functions in one place, use of topography, etc.

The second and third speakers (follow link above) considered "hacker ethics" and globalization as relevant features of the current context for education.  I'm looking forward to having the text of these as much went zipping by in the oral presentation.  Nonetheless, I did catch some key points.  Here are some reflections:
  1. If the "hacker ethic" promotes engaged pursuit of knowledge, and is able to regard an activity or project as both difficult and fun, then there is potential for the non-hacker educational process to "exploit" it for the more "traditional" goals that include pursuit of knowledge and cultivation of character.
  2. The tools of technology, while not morally neutral, are nonetheless, open to various uses.  In fact, in most instances, use of technology has more than one moral or social consequence at a time.
  3. Duration of presence is an important factor in shifting one's perception of a location from space one moves through to place in which one dwells in community with others.
  4. If globalization in the 21st century is in large degree a globalization based on personal relationships and consumer transactions, then it may well be that we are striving to be global citizens in a cosmopolis (world city) that does not (yet?) exist.  And if this is true, than one of the central tasks of this student generation and many after it, may be to construct that cosmopolis.
  5. On the other hand, it is prudent to recall that globalization is not an entirely new phenomenon.  Perhaps one shift is a sort of democratization.  But this I mean that awareness of and interdependence upon the  work of people around the world is no longer limited to an elite or a relatively few.  Clothes made in Indonesia are sold at low prices at Walmart and other American retail outlets; villagers in rural Turkey have stalllite dish, television reception in their homes.

The Power of Pocahontas

Reading Katie's post I begin to consider that the symbolic potency of Pocahontas may be rooted in the fact that while we have so few facts about her, we are confident that she was a historical figure.  Although the characters we create -- in film, in paintings, in poetry -- may not be accurate, the tenuous connection to a real person gives those images the energy of truth and allows Pocahontas to become part of our national mythology.  Here I use myth in the sense of a powerful story that shapes lives.  Even if the young Pocahontas did not save either John Smith or the whole Jamestown Colony, for good and for ill, her mythic self has shaped generations of Americans sense of what being American involves.  (See the accompanying image celebrating the tricentennial of Jamestown.)

God in America (2)

Thanks to Karin for this important connection between the Puritans and the story of Exodus.  Not only scholars say this, the people themselves thought of themselves as the New Israel.  They were not the last Americans to understand themselves on the basis of this biblical narrative.  Maybe it is another sort of "playing"--playing at being the Israelites led by Moses and freed by God for a special purpose.

Two other links to our course.  The first segment of the first episode focused on the SouthWest and included comments by a resident of the Santa Clara Pueblo.  Later the same episode offered us a reenactment of  Anne Hutchinson's trial based on the transcript.  The actor who portrayed John Winthrop was creepy.

Playing patriot.

Check out this comment by my cousin Clark on his book blog.  His comments on T. H. Breen's The Revolution of the People suggest that the book might be useful for Tea Party papers and even interesting on its own.  But, here's what grabbed me: a bit of autobiography about "playing" at some historical moment.

April 19th is a holiday in Massachusetts, Patriots Day, and each year on Patriot's Day I would walk the Isaac Davis trail from Acton to Concord and watch the parade and reenactment of the battle, with lots of colorful uniforms, muskets and cannon fire.


I don't know if the school kids in Acton got to wear costumes when they observed Patriots Day, but I do wonder about how this sort of observation works its way into our imaginations and our bones.  Of course Deloria on "playing Indian" is in the back of my mind together with the admission some of you made about having all the Pocahontas stuff.  How else do we get free of our own time, place, and skin other than by giving ourselves over to our imaginations?

What dream . . .

After class Wendy and I continued our conversation about Pocahontas.  It had started with my question: Is Pocahontas better understood as a historical figure, as a character (as in a film), or as a symbol.  Our class discussion explored this, paying attention to what each of the options entailed and how Pocahontas might be moved from one to another.  All this was preparing us to carry our argument to our consideration of images of her and poetry about her later in the week.

But, Wendy's remarks led me to wish that we'd also asked this question: what sort of dreams for America are stimulated by Pocahontas?  This question can be asked of any of the three: the young girl described in John Smith's General History, the "princess" in Disney's movie, even the symbolic bridge.  (Thanks Tou.)

Personfications, Symbols, Silence

"Piecing together the Aunt Jemima period of her grandmother's life, Norris juxtaposes her uncle's pride in his mother's small-town fame -- "She put that costume on and she was a star" -- with her mother's shame at the humiliating image and Norris' own disbelief, ambivalence and fascination. She also cleverly critiques the historical symbolism of the iconic pancake-wielding "mammy" character, from Aunt Jemima's debut at the 1893 World's Fair in the form of a large and gregarious former slave to the 1994 ad campaign starring Gladys Knight. "

The readings about symbolism, more particularly personification of such things as liberty or America in female figures, open up so many avenues of thought.  We'll move along one road toward Virginia, Pocahontas, Disney and the like.  Here I want to point in another.  Michelle Norris, of NPR fame, has written a book about her family that includes her grandmother's employment as a representative of Aunt Jemimah pancake mix.  Representative in italics because she was both selling the stuff by demonstrating it and dressed up as the fictional Aunt Jemimah.  I point toward Norris' treatment of her grandmother's experience because it is so nuanced and attentive to the ambiguities.  Like Deloria in the excerpt we read from Playing Indian, Norris probes the multiple meanings and the power of "disguise."  Moreover, in doing so she touches upon the matter of agency in a way that reminds me of our discussion of Anne Hutchinson.  Finally, her project is a fine example of the effort to make constructive use of one's past, in this case of her family's past in the context of the larger American culture.  I plan to read the book and consider using it in 202.

Senses and Place

"... all the senses were utilized....Everything was touchable, knowable, and accessible."  Rina Swentzell, "Conflicting Landscape Values: The Santa Clara Pueblo and Day School, p. 57

These two quotations highlight the close relationship between our physical senses and our psychological or spiritual senses.  The aroma of almond cookies in Macao brought me from Asia back to Christmas in Minnesota in a second; immediately I was intensely aware of being away from home, even as I was comforted by the taste of almond in a cookie stamped with a Chinese character rather than in the shape of a Christmas tree.


The shape of the land around us, the type of vegetation, the quality of light: these effect us in ways beyond what we see.  This weekend I was on a bus tour of historic churches in southeast Minnesota with a group of historians of Lutheranism.  One remarked on the acres and acres of half-harvested crops: "There is a lot of empty out there."  Her's was the very opposite response to my initial reaction to a deep, mountain valley.  There I sensed, not security, but constraint.


Seeing, smelling, touching, hearing, even tasting are the means by which we perceive our surroundings.  From those perceptions we gain a sense of where we are and who we are.  Anella quotes Harries: "true freedom is not freedom from constraint, but rather to be constrained only by what one really is, by one's essence."  Indeed, who one is, who we are, these identities involve boundaries that do constrain our freedom even as they provide a sense of belonging.
