Making a Railroad into a Park

source of photo
So, how cool is that?  Well, in Minnesota we do it a lot, but usually we turn an old RR route into a bike path (see the Midtown Greenway in Mpls and other rural examples) which is a great thing, but in New York City the story is a little different.  First, the railroad was elevated and second, so is the park which is more than a bike path.  The story of how an abandoned elevated train track in New York City is being converted into a Park is as cool as the idea itself.  A couple of citizens at a public hearing found each other and launched the campaign that generated (of course) a voluntary association that persevered and now people hang out to see the plants, to enjoy the view, to attend dance concerts, and more.  High Line Park can be seen at this official site and in the current issue of National Geographic, which is where I first learned about the project.  Now I'm longing for a trip to NYC!
